When the owners commissioned Alexiou & Associates Architects to design Lanai House they specified that they wanted a Bahamian Style or Island Style home, but with modern features. Little did they know, at the time, that shortly after the house was completed it would win an architectural award.

The owners requested large overhangs, covered verandahs and a maximum number of windows and French doors for indoor/outdoor living and cross ventilation. They did not want an over-size home because the property also features a lovely one-bedroom cottage, so they specified a 2-storey with 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. In keeping with the Island Style the owners selected a combination of hardwood floors with pickle finish in the living room, downstairs bedroom and the second-floor level with ceramic tile flooring in the dining room, kitchen and laundry room. Tongue and groove pickled pine ceilings and ceiling fans are featured throughout.

Although the home is located on the South side of the Fox Hill Creek Canal it has a clear view of Montagu Bay from the North facing covered verandah overlooking the canal and a superb view of the Bay from the master bedroom and the small covered verandah off the master bedroom. A great luxuriating feature in the master bedroom is a large Jacuzzi tub next to a large bay window with clear views of Montagu Bay. The master bedroom also has a mezzanine level which the owners presently use for storage of suitcases, Christmas ornaments, books, etc., accessible by a pull-down ladder. A beautiful stained glass window is a central feature in the master bedroom.

The owners also insisted on having a large 2-car garage, a rainwater tank, solar hot water heating and a 30-kw full service standby diesel generator with automatic transfer switch. Although the home is wonderfully cool most of the year, from superb cross ventilation, air-conditioning is also provided by 2, as new, high efficiency central air-conditioning units for the first and second floor levels and a split unit for the first level bedroom, currently used as a home office.

On the southern side of the home an inviting decked patio welcomes visitors and a seating area with large umbrella provides a wonderful sheltered area with fish pond and water feature for lounging on blustery days when it is too windy to enjoy the canal side.

The owner is an avid yachtsman having over the years owned and tied up in front of Lanai House every type of yacht, from a 41 ft sailboat to a high powered outboard open console Mako with tuna tower and finally a 35 ft Tiara cruiser. The canal frontage is fully equipped and serviced with 2 dock power pedestals as well as a small davit with electric hoist capable of accommodating small boats.

The owners have enjoyed their home immensely and only now wish to sell as they are now retired and favour the freedom of condominium living.
