ActivitiesSan Salvador
San Salvador may be a small island, but the opportunities for travelers to relax, explore, and take it all in are disproportionately large. Miles of beaches offer seclusion and snorkeling sites. Reefs and wrecks provide rewarding diving sites. And the flats circling the island offer hours, if not days, of game-fishing action. Visitors are also welcome to tour the old plantation ruins, explore historical Lucayan Indian sites, and climb up the old kerosene-operated lighthouse.
New World Museum
AttractionSan Salvador
Located at Cockburn Town, the Museum is housed in a 1910 building formerly used as the government's administrative offices and jail. This traditional museum contains many important artifacts and a display of the life of Christopher Columbus, which was developed under the auspices of Italian Senator, Paolo Emilio Taviani. It also houses the Sebastian Malta Ceramic Panel "VERBO AMERICA," in honour of the Lucayan people's contact with Christopher Columbus and donated by Nuova ERI of Italy - the other five panels were at the entrance to the World Fair in Seville Spain in 1992.
Bahamian Field Station
AttractionSan Salvador
Fax (242) 331 2524

Pigeon Creek Site
AttractionSan Salvador
Archaeological excavations, conducted by the Bahamian Field Station, have shown that the peaceful indigenous people of The Bahamas, the Lucayan/Taino Ameridians, had villages here.
Cut Cay
AttractionSan Salvador
Columbus referred to Cut Cay (the island that is not an island) in his journal. It is the small island across a shallow channel off North Point. At low tide, you can wade across to Cut Cay. Columbus thought that it would be a good site for a fortress.
Watling's Castle/Sandy Point Estate
AttractionSan Salvador
Watling's Castle, the ruins of a late 18th century Loyalist plantation house, was named after George Watling, a buccaneer who frequented the place. The substantial ruins at Sandy Point, including the three storey "Great House," kitchen, slave quarters, barns and boundary walls, were studied by the Bahamian Field Station. The Lookout Tower, which overlooks French Bay, has been restored.
Big Fortune Hill Plantation
AttractionSan Salvador
Mr. Burton Williams, a Loyalist, maintained a cottage plantation at Fortune Hill in the late 1780's. The ruins of the "Great House" and slave quarters can still be seen here.
Dixon Hill Lighthouse
AttractionSan Salvador
Built in 1887 on a former plantation owned by John Dixon, this 400,000 candle powered lighthouse has a visibility of 19 miles. Standing 163 feet above sea level, it maintains four-hour watches nightly, giving a double flash every 10 seconds. This kerosene lit, hand-operated lighthouse is the last of its type in The Islands of The Bahamas.
The Landfall Park
MonumentsSan Salvador
The Landfall Park (at the Long Bay Site), a ten-acre site rich in archaeological artifacts, is the first landfall of Christopher Columbus in the "New World." On October 12,1492, after 33 days at sea, Columbus landed probably at beautiful Fernandez Bay (Long Bay). A simple white cross, erected in 1956 by Mrs. Ruth D. Wolper, commemorates the historic event. Also on this site is the Mexican Monument which housed the Olympic flame in 1968 on its journey from Greece to Mexico City.
UNESCO Monument
MonumentsSan Salvador
On August 2, 1991 the Director-General of UNESCO, in the presence of the Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, declared San Salvador a "Monument of the Quincentennial," acknowledging it as the geographical starting point of the "new American epoch" commencing October 12, 1492.
Chicago Herald Monument
MonumentsSan Salvador
The 1892 World's Fair, held in Chicago, celebrated the 400th Anniversary of the "discovery" of the "New World." In 1891, the Chicago Herald, an American newspaper, erected this sphere (hewn from native limestone) in commemoration of Columbus' landfall (but on the wrong site).

The place is named for the pieces of driftwood that decorate its ceiling and walls. Starting in the late 50's and early 60's, visitors began autographing the pieces of wood they found on the beach and leaving them behind as mementos. Those who couldn't find wood began leaving whatever swept up on the beach - net floats, pieces of buoys and ship's glass; others leave more personal items, such as T-shirts and business cards. Beer, wine, sodas and a wonderful variety of blended island drinks are available from the Driftwood's expert local bartenders. You can also enjoy sports games via cable TV, try the ring toss game or relax on the open air patio and enjoy great views of San Salvador's western shoreline and beach. The bar is open from 11am to midnight daily. Wednesday is Disco Night, featuring a variety of dance music and a Limbo contest, beginning at 8:30 pm The management sponsors two cocktail parties for guests each week.
