Christ Church Cathedral
ChurchesNassau
While sun, sea and sand are the main draws for tourists in The Bahamas, some visitors take the time to explore historical churches. Many are surprised to discover the history of Christ Church Cathedral, a massive Gothic Revival Building on the corner of King and George Streets. The present church stands on the site of the first Christ Church Cathedral, which was built in 1670. It was destroyed by fire in 1648 by invading Spanish. A second church was built on the site in 1693, however, the Spanish invaded again eight years later, destroying the church and a nearby fishing village. In 1721, a third church was constructed of wood, under the leadership of The Bahamas first royal governor, Woods Rogers. The fourth church, of stone, was later constructed on the site in 1754. The foundation stone of today's church was laid in 1837. In the following decades the cathedral was battered by hurricanes, especially during the 1920s, and extensive repairs were made. The church was again damaged in the Bay Street fire of 1942. However, Christ Church Cathedral still stands as an impressive structure and has hosted services attended by Queen Elizabeth II and other visiting heads of state. The Cathedral features an extensive collection of stained-glass windows. The main window, located over the altar, depicts the crucifixion of Chris. Plaques on the cathedral's walls memorialize some of New Providence notable citizens.
St Andrew's Presbyterian Kirk
ChurchesNassau
The second oldest church in New Providence, the "Kirk", a Scottish term for "church", was founded by the St Andrew's Society in 1798, however its foundation stone wasn't laid until 1810. According to minister Rev Alastair Gray the church gets a number of visits from tourist of all nationalities. They can appreciate that it's such a very old building. They can see memorials to founding Scottish families and the plain white walls make the stained glass windows really stand out. The Church is normally closed during the day, but if an attendant is present, visitors can go in and have a look.
St Francis Xavier Cathedral
ChurchesNassau
Located on West Hill Street opposite the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, it is the first Roman Catholic church built in The Bahamas. The foundation stone was laid in 1885 and in 1887 it was consecrated by the Archbishop of New York Michael A Corrigan. Today's St Francis Xavier Cathedral features a blend of two buildings, the original church and a new addition which was completed in late 2003.

The Ocean Club features luxury resort accommodations and championship golf course at Paradise Islands in the Bahamas. South Ocean Golf Course
Sports & Recreation (Golfing)Nassau
Designed by Joe Lee with four challenging water holes, the South Ocean Golf Course is so isolated from the congestion of Nassau that you can imagine yourself on a remote island. Encompassing more than 195 tropical acres, its own private 18 hole golf course, feels worlds away from reality. The rolling terrain is hilly and dotted with palm trees; from this relatively high elevation, you'll enjoy views over the "Tongue of the Ocean." We think this course is better and more demanding than the other major choice on New Providence Island at Cable Beach.

The oldest golf course in The Bahamas, this par-72 course was the private retreat for British expatriates in the 1930s. Small ponds and water traps heighten the challenge, amid more than 6,473m (7,040 yd.) of well-maintained greens and fairways. Until recently the course was owned by the Bahamas Government and operated by the hotels on Cable Beach. The property was recently purchased by a development group who plan a major redevelopment of the area over the period of the next three years including three new hotels and a new 18-hole championship course.
Tennis
Sports & Recreation (Tennis)Nassau
Most tennis courts are part of large resorts and are usually free for the use of registered guests during the day. Charges are imposed to light the courts at night. Non-guests are welcome but are charged a player's fee; they should call in advance to reserve. Larger resorts usually offer on-site pro shops and professional instructors. Court surfaces range from clay or asphalt to such technologically advanced substances as Flexipave and Har-Tru. New Providence, with more than 80 tennis courts, wins points for offering the greatest number of choices. At least 21 of these lie on Paradise Island. Also noteworthy are the many well-lit courts at the Radisson Cable Beach Hotel. After New Providence, Grand Bahama has the largest number of courts available for play -- almost 40 in all. Within the Out Islands, tennis courts are available on Eleuthera, the Abacos, the Berry Islands, and the Exumas.

Shopping
ShoppingNassau
In a country where the average temperature is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, not many people would expect to find an abundance of fine cashmere sweaters, much less incredible bargains on them. But wander into your average Bahamian retail store, and there they are, lining the racks, along with an astonishingly cheap assortment of other duty-free luxury items from all around the globe. Once you discover the great deals, you might find yourself coming back just for the shopping. Among the best bargains in the islands are watches, jewelry, clocks, china, crystal, leather goods, fine linens, and cameras. A key to finding the best bargains is to look for shops that post a pink flamingo decal on their doors or windows. This signifies that they have met strict government guidelines, and that all their brands are authentic. Along with the international products, you can also find great bargains on local goods, such as Bahamian weavings, jewelry, and crafts.
Straw Markets

Straw Markets can be found on many islands in The Bahamas. Nassau's famous Straw Market is one of the largest in the world, and is open seven days a week from early morning until evening. Here, you'll find an array of handmade mats, hats and baskets along with fabrics, jewelry, woodcarvings, and guava jellies. Of course, half the fun of shopping a straw market is meeting local merchants and bargaining for their handmade products.

The practice of law in The Bahamas continues the oldest traditions and highest standards of the profession. If you witness a trial in the Supreme Court or Court of Appeal, you will observe not only the colonial horsehair wigs and gowns, but also the good manners and professional etiquette, while each side tenaciously defends his client's cause. The key quality expected of lawyers is integrity. You will also find that independence of the profession is a most prominent feature. This has had the side effect of producing a large number of small or sole practitioner firms. It is very easy to find a wide selection of competent lawyers who will take your instructions. The Code of Professional Conduct sets out in practical detail the standards that lawyers are expected to observe. All of them are to be followed meticulously and conscientiously. The Code is contained in the second blue volume of subsidiary legislation of The Bahamas, Chapter 44 at pages 888 to 918. Lawyers are measured by those standards in proceedings in the Ethics Committee and the Disciplinary Tribunal. More importantly, the rules provide guidance in every day situations. Constructive criticism is the essence of a self-governing profession; indeed, the Code indicates how criticism should be channeled and how it may be most constructive.

Education in the Bahamas
SchoolNassau
The Bahamas has a fairly good education system which unfortunately is mostly public (i.e., government intellectually and fiscally controlled). School attendance is compulsory between the ages of 5 and 16. As of 1999, the government fully operates 158 of the 210 primary and secondary schools in The Bahamas. The other 52 schools are privately operated. Enrollment for state and private primary and secondary schools amounts to more than 66,000 students. School starts from nursery (age 3) or kindergarten (age 4) all the way up to high school (grade 12).
The government provides education at its Ministry of Education schools throughout The Bahamas tuition free. In the Family Islands, 127 are government-run and 22 private. Schools in The Bahamas fall under the following two categories: Primary Ages 5 - 11 and Secondary Ages 11- 16 and over. There are also various schools catering to special education for all ages and schools for higher learning.
The College of The Bahamas, established in Nassau in 1974, provides programs leading to bachelors and associates degrees. The college is now converting from a 2-year to a 4-year institution. Several non-Bahamian colleges also offer higher education programs in The Bahamas.
There are several other government-operated institutions in The Bahamas which offer higher education, such as the University of the West Indies (regional), the Bahamas Hotel Training College and the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute.
In addition, some universities in the United States offer degree programs in The Bahamas such as University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University. Classes are held on weekends and in the evenings in Nassau.
The colleges in the Bahamas are mostly two year, though there is one four year college in Nassau. Basic literacy is fairly high (over 95%).

Banking
BankingNassau
The Bahamas is one of the financial centers of the Caribbean, with approximately 400 banks registered in the country. Financial services produces some 15 percent of GDP and is the second-largest industry after tourism. The government seeks to attract foreign banks, and the financial sector is extremely open to foreigners. The government is under extreme pressure from the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) and others to tighten regulation of the offshore financial sector.
Growing from a tiny off shore tax haven comprised of a few branches of foreign banks in the mid-sixties to world banking powerhouse. The country's legislation and regulatory structure, comparatively highly-skilled workforce, and its stable government have attracted the some of the most prestigious financial institutions from around the globe.
Air transportation, modern infrastructure, including a telecommunications system, support most kinds of business operations.
The asset base of the Bahamas' banking center is in excess of $200 billion, positioning it among the top ten countries in the world, behind the USA, the UK, Japan, Switzerland and others, with Capital-asset ratios average 11%.
Private banking, portfolio management, and mutual fund administration have gained in importance in recent years, reinforcing the international community's recognition of the Bahamas as a safe repository of the financial assets of both individuals and corporations.
Over 400 banks from thirty-six different countries, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, France, the United States, Canada, and Japan, are currently licensed to conduct business within or from the Bahamas. Many are branches or subsidiaries.
Licensees include a very active offshore banking community, with almost one hundred Euro Currency branches of international banks and trusts, as well as 168 Bahamian incorporated institutions. Over 60% of all the banks licensed within the Bahamas, offer trust services in addition to their regular banking operations.
The banking community of the Bahamas is supervised by the Central Bank of the Bahamas, which attempts to maintain a regulatory environment conducive to investment opportunities, while ensuring the high standards of conduct, as developed by the Basil Committee on Banking Supervision.
The self-regulatory code of conduct of the Association of International Banks and Trust Companies (AIBT) also deters the use of financial operations for criminal activities and upholds the principles of bank secrecy.
