Small Hope, with just twenty-one beachfront cottage rooms, has four dive boats, six instructors and one assistant on staff. Average boat time is 15 minutes and we leave right from our dock on property. After breakfast stroll out to the dock for your morning 2 tank dive, come back for lunch and then go back to the dock for the 2PM 1 tank afternoon dive. The average water temperature is 24 degrees C / 78 degrees F. Our dive center has plenty of space for your gear, complete rental gear and repair facilities. Don't forget your C card!
Our largest dive boat carries up to 16 divers, our next dive boat carries up to 12 divers. Both of these boats have covers. We have 2 small boats that are generally used for specialty dives and can take up to 4 divers or 8 snorkelers. Dive boats visit three sites every day, four if there's a night dive. With over 60 different sites, very seldom would you get a repeat dive during your stay. The sites that we visit are based upon our guests abilities and requests. If it necessary to send out 2 boats to better accommodate our guests, then we will do so.
For beginners: The Lodge offers complimentary Discover Scuba lessons as well as complete Open Water Certifications. We specialize in sharing our underwater world with new divers. Divemasters accompany every single dive, and our videographer accompanies most dives. The PADI Open Water Course, Adventure and Advanced Open Water are offered regularly. We also offer SDI/TDI and NAUI training and referrals are gladly accepted from all certifying agencies. Other advanced specialty certifications are available with prior arrangement.

We at Small Hope Bay Lodge believe it takes more than world-class conditions to have a world-class fishing experience. Sure, we have bonefish. Great schools of them and thousands of miles of flats. Tarpon, too. Serious fly fishermen come here and try to keep it all to themselves. We have great reef fishing, Grouper school in December and January, mutton snapper run in the summer. Dolphin and tuna and more keep spincasters fed. We also have great guides who have experience not just in fishing, but in catering to fishermen. They know the waters. Their boats are sound and properly equipped. Then there's the food and drink. We believe in eating well-very well. We pack you a great lunch each day you go out to the flats. And greet you with a great dinner when you return.

Bonefishing
BonefishingAcklins

Bonefishing has become a local favorite within The Islands of The Bahamas. Bonefishing takes place in the flats, where guides slowly pole small flat-bottomed boats for anglers, or the truly dedicated quietly stalk these elusive fish by wading through knee-deep water. These quicksilver fighters, weighing up to 15 pounds, inspire both fly fishermen and spin casters alike with their power and speed. Unpredictable and wily, the bonefish are often found in schools of 100 or more, making for exciting bursts of action. Don't try to eat these bottom skimmers-you'll quickly realize how they got their name.

Bennet Davis is an outstanding artist, born and raised on the island of Bimini. He has had no formal training, but has been fascinated with colors and art from an early age and believes that his talent is a gift from God. Mr. Davis specializes in island scenes, still life, and abstract paintings, using oil, acrylic and water mediums on canvas, also designs shirts, logos, billboards and murals. He was once commissioned to do a piece for Sir Orville Turnquest, former Governor General of The Islands of The Bahamas. He designed the painting that graces the cover of the Bimini Informational Map; the mural that appears on Bimini Big Game Fishing Club's wall; the shirts for the first Grand Bahama Games, as well all of the shirts for the Charlie "Softly" Robins Basketball Camps, which are held in both Bimini and Grand Bahama. Paintings by Mr. Davis are displayed in many of the homes and local businesses on the island of Bimini. Over the years, Bimini's native bread has continued to receive rave reviews from everyone that has tried it. It has become so popular with visitors that it has now been added to the list of tourist attractions for the island. The bread looks like ordinary white bread but, unlike ordinary white bread, it is sweeter and much tastier. The ingredients are the usual flour, yeast, sugar, shortening, and salt. However, each bread maker adds a little special touch, so not all Bimini bread has the same flavor and texture. Many of the local bakers also make banana bread, coconut bread, and other breads and tarts, but the most popular item is plain white bread. Bimini Bread is served in Bimini's top restaurants and it is also available at local markets and the homes of local bread bakers.

Bonefishing
FishingCrooked Island

Grand Bahama Island is the only place you can be guaranteed to dive with dolphins in the wild. This is done through the Underwater Explorers' Society's (UNEXSO) "Dolphin Dive" program. On this exciting and very unique dive, resident dolphins rendezvous with divers in the open water along a coral reef about a mile off shore. Many people wait their whole lives to get close to a dolphin in the wild before learning that they can swim with them right here on Grand Bahama Island. You'll get to hand-feed and interact with these amazing animals in their natural habitat. This is one of UNEXSO's signature dives and great for dolphin lovers.

Grand Bahama Island is considered one of the premier destinations in the world for sportfishing. If you're ready for a good fight, then strap yourself in and get ready to hook onto a marlin, sailfish, blue, and yellowfin tuna, bonefish, or barracuda-to name a few. One of the world's best game fish-the bonefish-not only likes the waters of Grand Bahama Island, but is more at home here than anywhere else in the world. The flats off Deep Water Cay, in the East, are praised year after year by fishing writers from around the globe. The Old Bahama Flats off West End also yield great catches. Fly-fishing, particularly for bonefish, is quickly gaining popularity on Grand Bahama Island and throughout The Islands of The Bahamas. Next to golf, it is the fastest growing sport. The best time to go fishing is between April and September, though winter is good too. In addition to independent fishing guides, there are several water-sports companies, marinas, hotels and picturesque lodges in the Eastern and Western areas that cater to the sport exclusively. They would be more than happy to lead you to the best fishing grounds-for a reasonable price.

Birding
BirdingGrand Bahama

Out of all the 700 islands and cays that make up The Islands Of The Bahamas, Grand Bahama Island has the distinction of hosting the second highest number of native bird species. For birdwatchers and nature lovers, the island is a true mecca, a place where they can see 18 of the 28 species of Bahamian birds that are not seen in the U.S., Canada, or Europe. One of the Grand Bahama Specialty Birds is the Red-legged Thrush pictured above. Fall migrants can be seen in late September and October. Many of these species spend the winter on Grand Bahama Island and other islands Of The Bahamas. There have been rare sightings of the Kirkland's warbler and an eastern phoebe. Birds migrating north in the spring are best seen during March, April, and May. The best time of year to see the permanent and summer resident species is the summer months. During the Annual Christmas Bird Count of 2001, 97 different migratory and resident species were counted, totaling 3,342 birds! Highlights were: 1,000+ Myrtle or Yellow-rumped Warblers, which migrate from Canada and the N.E. United States; a Canadian Goose, which had never before been seen in the Bahamas; and a flock of Cedar Waxwings, a very rare sighting.

Boating and Sailing
Boating and SailingGrand Bahama

Some of the world's most beautiful stretches of sea surround Grand Bahama Island, a fact that accounts for the high number of visitors who arrive here the old-fashioned way-by sailing into port. The island has seven marinas, many of them fully equipped with electricity hubs, waste-disposal units, and fuel stations. The Annual Grand Bahama Sailing Regatta, held in June, and is a popular event for boating enthusiasts and for those who just want to watch the magnificent native sloops sail gracefully along Taino Beach. Even though trophies and cash prizes are awarded, perhaps the most sought after prize is the reputation of being a "champion of the seas."

Even if you are far from being a sailor, you can still enjoy the island by boat. There are plenty of sailing tours available, and some feature fine dining and/or beach parties. The Bahamas has given due consideration to the concern of the boating community and has decided that the current fees of $150.00 for boats up to 35 feet in length and $300.00 for boats over 35 feet, shall be valid for two entries during a 90-day period, commencing December 1, 2003 as an interim measure.

In the long term, The Bahamas Government is considering an annual fee structure and will continue the dialogue with both the domestic and the international boating communities to determine how such a policy can be best implemented.

This will cover a vessel with four persons or less. The fee will cover the cruising permit, fishing permit, Customs and Immigration charges and the $15 per person departure tax for up to four persons. Each additional person above four will be charged $15.00 departure tax. If you plan to stay longer than 12 months, special arrangements must be made with Bahamas Customs and Immigration.

Regular hours for Bahamas Customs and Immigration Officers are 9am - 5pm weekdays. Officers are on call during holidays and weekends. There is no overtime charge.

There is an ample supply of nightclubs where you can get a taste of the local sounds, several discos where you can dance almost 'til dawn, a casino with virtually nonstop action, and the square at Port Lucaya Marketplace-which usually has some special activity the whole family can enjoy. Grand Bahama Island averages seven hours of completely sunny skies per day, and rain seldom lasts for longer than it takes to get under cover-even during the rainy season. So there's no season to limit play here, just year-round blue skies and warm weather. While some golfers may view the Atlantic Ocean as one great water hazard, others know that championship fairways and greens are only a chip-shot away.

Private Flying

The Islands Of The Bahamas invite exploration from the air as well as the sea. Skies are gorgeous and clear with the weather being "severe clear" nearly every day of the year. Puffy cumulus clouds generally dot the island skies at around 2,500' in the morning, if at all, rising to 7,500' in the afternoon. High ceilings and excellent visibility are the norm. It is advisable to check with the airports for availability and prices. Use the information provided to plan the details of your flight itinerary.

Dunmore Plantation
Attraction (Historical)Long Island
Dunmore's Long Island

It takes determination and the help of a resident of the area to reach the ruins of the old Dunmore estate. This former slave plantation house, built of limestone with two fireplaces and chimneys, is located in Dunmore's, a very small settlement in the south. There are still drawings of sailboats used during the plantation era on the walls. About half-a-mile from the site, there are two pillars, apparently the remaining gate-posts to the plantation.

Atlantis offers a health-and-beauty spa, a fitness center, children's and teen clubs, a nightclub, a comedy club, 21 restaurants, the 50,000-square-foot casino, and shopping malls, and provides access to 3 miles of Atlantic Ocean beach and a private golf course.

Ocean Club Golf Course
Sports & Recreation (Golfing)Nassau

The Ocean Club features luxury resort accommodations and championship golf course at Paradise Islands in the Bahamas. Ocean Club features an 18-hole championship golf course that covers over 7,100 yards at par72. Tom Weiskopf designed this immaculate Bahamas course featuring seaside tee sets and greens utilizing alternating fairways providing the ultimate challenge on your Paradise Island golf vacation.

South Ocean Golf Course
Sports & Recreation (Golfing)Nassau

Designed by Joe Lee with four challenging water holes, the South Ocean Golf Course is so isolated from the congestion of Nassau that you can imagine yourself on a remote island. Encompassing more than 195 tropical acres, its own private 18 hole golf course, feels worlds away from reality. The rolling terrain is hilly and dotted with palm trees; from this relatively high elevation, you'll enjoy views over the "Tongue of the Ocean." We think this course is better and more demanding than the other major choice on New Providence Island at Cable Beach.

Cable Beach Golf Course
Sports & Recreation (Golfing)Nassau

The oldest golf course in The Bahamas, this par-72 course was the private retreat for British expatriates in the 1930s. Small ponds and water traps heighten the challenge, amid more than 6,473m (7,040 yd.) of well-maintained greens and fairways. Until recently the course was owned by the Bahamas Government and operated by the hotels on Cable Beach. The property was recently purchased by a development group who plan a major redevelopment of the area over the period of the next three years including three new hotels and a new 18-hole championship course.

Tennis
Sports & Recreation (Tennis)Nassau

Most tennis courts are part of large resorts and are usually free for the use of registered guests during the day. Charges are imposed to light the courts at night. Non-guests are welcome but are charged a player's fee; they should call in advance to reserve. Larger resorts usually offer on-site pro shops and professional instructors. Court surfaces range from clay or asphalt to such technologically advanced substances as Flexipave and Har-Tru. New Providence, with more than 80 tennis courts, wins points for offering the greatest number of choices. At least 21 of these lie on Paradise Island. Also noteworthy are the many well-lit courts at the Radisson Cable Beach Hotel. After New Providence, Grand Bahama has the largest number of courts available for play -- almost 40 in all. Within the Out Islands, tennis courts are available on Eleuthera, the Abacos, the Berry Islands, and the Exumas.

Shopping
ShoppingNassau

In a country where the average temperature is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, not many people would expect to find an abundance of fine cashmere sweaters, much less incredible bargains on them. But wander into your average Bahamian retail store, and there they are, lining the racks, along with an astonishingly cheap assortment of other duty-free luxury items from all around the globe. Once you discover the great deals, you might find yourself coming back just for the shopping. Among the best bargains in the islands are watches, jewelry, clocks, china, crystal, leather goods, fine linens, and cameras. A key to finding the best bargains is to look for shops that post a pink flamingo decal on their doors or windows. This signifies that they have met strict government guidelines, and that all their brands are authentic. Along with the international products, you can also find great bargains on local goods, such as Bahamian weavings, jewelry, and crafts.

Straw Markets
ShoppingNassau

Straw Markets can be found on many islands in The Bahamas. Nassau's famous Straw Market is one of the largest in the world, and is open seven days a week from early morning until evening. Here, you'll find an array of handmade mats, hats and baskets along with fabrics, jewelry, woodcarvings, and guava jellies. Of course, half the fun of shopping a straw market is meeting local merchants and bargaining for their handmade products.

Restaurants include; Café Martinique, featuring the gourmet cuisine of French chef Jean Georges Vongerichten; Bimini Road, which features Caribbean dishes and live entertainment against a brightly-colored backdrop; Carmine's Italian Restaurant, a popular New York eatery known for its Italian dishes; Seafire Steakhouse, featuring seared and grilled fare; and Johnny Rockets, a hamburger chain that serves some 22 million hamburgers per year to its patrons worldwide, make up the many dining possibilities at the Marina Village.

Tour operators, resorts, and the tourist office are ready to assist you with any details you may need. Anything from a simple wedding to a lavish reception can be arranged. To be wed on our islands, couples must be here for 15 days prior to applying for a marriage license (or one day if a waiver is granted by The Registrar General). The marriage license must be obtained at least one day prior to the wedding. Birth certificates and notarized affidavit are required; if appropriate, you'll also need divorce papers, a former spouse's death certificate, and parental consent if under 18.

Effective January 1, 1992, the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas abolished all import duties on 11 categories of items. Perfumes and Fragrances, Crystal, Leather Goods, Jewelry, Fine Linens and Tablecloths, Watches and Clocks, Photographic Equipment, China, Binoculars, and Telescopes are now all duty free. To know if a store is a duty-free shop, simply look for the duty-free logo: DFS. Savings on these items are between 25% - 50% below US prices, so it's easy to see why people often return from The Islands of The Bahamas with more than nice tans.

Activities
ActivitiesSan Salvador

San Salvador may be a small island, but the opportunities for travelers to relax, explore, and take it all in are disproportionately large. Miles of beaches offer seclusion and snorkeling sites. Reefs and wrecks provide rewarding diving sites. And the flats circling the island offer hours, if not days, of game-fishing action. Visitors are also welcome to tour the old plantation ruins, explore historical Lucayan Indian sites, and climb up the old kerosene-operated lighthouse.

This traditional museum contains many important artifacts and a display of the life of Christopher Columbus, which was developed under the auspices of Italian Senator, Paolo Emilio Taviani. It also houses the Sebastian Malta Ceramic Panel "VERBO AMERICA," in honour of the Lucayan people's contact with Christopher Columbus and donated by Nuova ERI of Italy - the other five panels were at the entrance to the World Fair in Seville Spain in 1992.

Those who couldn't find wood began leaving whatever swept up on the beach - net floats, pieces of buoys and ship's glass; others leave more personal items, such as T-shirts and business cards. Beer, wine, sodas and a wonderful variety of blended island drinks are available from the Driftwood's expert local bartenders. You can also enjoy sports games via cable TV, try the ring toss game or relax on the open air patio and enjoy great views of San Salvador's western shoreline and beach.
